Background of the Study
Mental health awareness is essential for fostering a society that recognizes and addresses mental health challenges. Counseling services play a critical role in mental health promotion by offering guidance, emotional support, and coping strategies to individuals experiencing psychological distress (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). In Nigeria, mental health remains a neglected area of healthcare, with many individuals lacking access to proper mental health education and professional counseling services (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
Adamawa State, like many regions in Nigeria, faces growing concerns over mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), exacerbated by social and economic challenges (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Despite the increasing need for mental health awareness, counseling services remain underutilized due to stigma, limited access, and insufficient trained professionals (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
This study examines the role of counseling services in promoting mental health awareness in Adamawa State and explores the challenges and opportunities for expanding mental health support systems.
Statement of the Problem
Mental health issues are on the rise in Adamawa State, yet many individuals fail to seek professional help due to stigma and a lack of awareness (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Counseling services, which should play a key role in mental health education and intervention, are often inaccessible or underdeveloped (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
Without proper mental health support, individuals suffering from psychological distress may experience worsened conditions, affecting their productivity, relationships, and overall quality of life (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling services in raising mental health awareness and addressing psychological challenges in Adamawa State.
